You’ve bought the domain name. You’ve set up your site. Now you want it to blow all other sites out of the water? Then you need SEO. Search Engine Optimization.
Welcome to the crazy world of SEO gurus, guides, fanatics and failures. Here’s your quick SEO cheatsheet to get you up to speed.
Search Engines (like Google and Yahoo etc.) currently have intense patented formulas to help them take search terms like “Red Hot Miniskirt” or “How do I fix a pipe” and bring you relatively relevant results. In the end, Google is a machine that can scan and store the contents of your .html site but can not intuitively measure the value of any website. SO Google turns to you, the typical user.(Sorry but right now, Search Engines can read a single word you have written within a flash component. So if your whole site is flash, you are essentially invisible to the search engines)
Google values your site based on 2 criteria, keywords and links. The more times you have “Red Hot Miniskirt” in your text, the more google will associate YOURSITE.com with “YOUR KEYWORDS”. As for links, One-way links are the most powerful by far, i.e. some site links to you but you don’t link back. Reciprocal linking is ok too. There are lots of really great tools to help you with both of these aspects. But really just write really good copy and start getting people to link to you.
